CBT Nuggets: Perl Programming

Perl is the stealth powerhouse hidden behind many data-driven websites. You can use it to create HTML pages on the fly, pulling content from multiple files and databases. And that's just the beginning. Perl is so powerful and flexible that you're more likely to be limited by your imagination than by what the language can do.

A how-to introduction to Perl

Our CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) Perl Fundamentals series starts basic - when and why you use Perl in Web development. Then, you learn how:

How to use Perl syntax.
How to empower your programming with flow control.
How to create dynamic content by reading and editing files with scripts.
How to access databases using hashes, giving data-driven power to your applications.
How Perl can be used for object-oriented programming... or procedural programming.
How to debug and fix things when they don't work.
And how to get quick results by customizing public-domain scripts to make them do what you want. (This gives Perl beginners the ability to easily use complex functionalities, without tons of hours trying to get beyond "Hello world!")
CIW exam training and more

The content in the CIW Perl Fundamentals series maps to the exam objectives for exam 1D0-437 from Prosoft/CIWcertified.com. This exam is part of the certification track for Master CIW Web Site Manager and Master CIW Enterprise Developer, fitting under the Web Languages requirement.

But, CIW Perl Fundamentals is not just for those on the CIW certification track. If you want to know how to use the building blocks of Web applications, this training will teach you. If you've dabbled in web programming, and want to take it to the next level - perhaps even as a career change - this training is what you need. If you want to start downloading Perl scripts and modules, understanding their functionality, and changing that functionality to apply to your specific situation - you'll be able to do that by the time you're done studying this training.

These videos will give you the fundamental knowledge you need to start developing using Perl. Plus you'll have the motivation to go much deeper into the language, and the confidence to do so.

Prerequisites:

A basic understanding of internet programming such as what?s taught in the CIW Associate series is suggested before viewing this training. This series contains 15 videos, for nearly 6 hours of training.

The CIW Perl Fundamentals series contains these videos:

- What is Perl? (free video!)
- The Perl interpreter
- Implementing and use basic Perl syntax

- Using regular expressions to define and match patterns and strings
- Using Perl arrays
- Using Perl hashes
- Creating and calling subroutines
- Manipulating files and devices
- Environment variables and command-line arguments
